Dido

... was born on Christmas Day 1971, and registered (possibly christened) as Florian Cloud de Bounevialle Armstrong. She was known to her family from childhood as Dido; her elder brother, Rowland Constantine O'Malley Armstrong – now known as a record producer and part of the electronica trio Faithless – was known in similar fashion as Rollo.

Dido is not happy having two names, either or both of which might be regarded as somewhat pretentious – and which apparently led to bullying. She adopted ordinary names (Chloe and Claire), by which she preferred to be known to her friends; but her cover was blown when her mum turned up at school asking for Dido.

In 2001 she told The Observer: "To be called one thing and christened another is actually very confusing and annoying. It's one of the most irritating things that my parents did to me ... Florian is a German man's name. That's just mean. To give your child a whole lot of odd names. They were all so embarrassing ... I thought it was cruel to call me Dido and then expect me to just deal with it."

The original Dido was the legendary founder and first queen of Carthage. She is primarily known from the account given by Virgil in the Aeneid.
